Who is Jane The Virgin?
As a young girl, Jane Villanueva's grandmother gave her a white flower. She told her to hold it in her hand, then to crush it in her hands and finally to try to make it look the way it did before she crumpled it. Jane couldn't. This is when Jane's grandmother explained that the flower represented her virginity. This was also when Jane made a promise to herself to remain a virgin until she married. She even kept the flower as a reminder.

Jane comes from a very Catholic household that includes her mother, her grandmother and herself. Jane's mother, who had her as a teenager, works as a dance teacher and Jane's grandmother, who immigrated to the United States from Venezuela, works in a hotel gift shop. Jane is a waitress at a hotel with hopes of becoming a teacher and a writer. One day, Jane goes to her gynaecologist for a regular appointment, but her doctor mixes up her appointment with another patient's. Jane, unknowingly, gets accidentally artificially inseminated and becomes pregnant.

Jane meets with the father of the baby, who just happens to be Rafael, her teenage crush and he works in the same hotel as her (in fact his dad owns it), who is married to Petra, a cold and serious business woman. Things spiral out of control when her virginal pregnancy goes viral and religious followers come to meet her in hopes that she will grant them fertility. She becomes known as "Jane The Virgin". Everything that follows only makes Jane's life more hectic and complicated!
The show, based on a Venezuelan telenovela, is now on its forth season and has been both praised and critiqued for the way it portrays religion and modern, everyday religious people. This show continues to incorporate religious themes and symbolism in its characters and its plot.
